The Guangzhou Charge are the lowest ranking team in the East, but is that really so terrible?

There's a chance here for the Charge to finally have a decent season… or is there?

Guangzhou Charge 2023 Roster

Mixed Korean and Chinese rosters are usual for Guangzhou Charge. This year seems no different, with a mixed roster in line with that trend. While the team may have lost a few great players in the last year, the tradeoff was a much more well rounded team. Despite being the lowest ranked team in the East Region, they are still ranked in the middle of the pack for the whole league. The roster includes no rookie players, which puts experience on their side, as all of these players are already proven to be pretty good overall.

Tank

  • Min-jun “PIGGY” Shin

Once a loveable Houston Off-Tank, PIGGY made his name in the single Tank meta, meaning that despite his specialty heroes, he's experienced being a solo frontline player. In Winston led metas like the one we've seen the last year, its uncertain how PIGGY will perform. Being that he's a very experienced D.Va player, the team may just choose to play him on that for their dive compositions rather than having him play a whole new hero. Due to how good of a player he is, this team is one of few that will be able to get by this way.

Support

  • Jiale “Farway1987” Cao
  • Xianyao “Xerneas” Li

The East Region definitely has their standout Support players, but Supports aren't encouraged to be quite so flashy and versatile. A lot of the time in this region, Supports go overlooked and underappreciated. Farway and Xerneas are a Support duo that have plenty of experience together, and have gone far overlooked. They were part of the GOATS killers Chengdu Hunters roster, the only team that had partial success finding wins without playing GOATS in 2019. Not only are they experienced veterans, but they've had to play through GOATS, through the wacky COVID changes, and in every format the league has had so far. They may just be the most trustworthy backline in the region, or even the league.

DPS

  • Yujia “Jimmy” Lei
  • Se-hwan “ChoiSehwan” Choi

Two underrated DPS players come together to try and prove their worth. ChoiSehwan has been getting a bit of due credit as of the end of the 2022 regular season, but it was difficult for him to shine when he had such a great Hitscan DPS in Ou “Eileen” Yiliang next to him. Jimmy had quite the same issue, being overshadowed in Chegdu by the likes of  Yi “Jinmu” Hu and Huang “leave” Xin. Side by side as equal players, these two have the chance to hold even ground together and be known as a synchronized team, not a player who carries or gets carried.

Guangzhou Charge 2023 Power Ranking

If Guangzhou were in the West, there are teams that would get completely dominated by them. However, because they're in the East, featuring players that were previously with only moderately successful teams, they have much to prove. The players themselves have showed plenty of individual talent, but how will they hold up against East region stars and championship level teams in their region? Being ranked this high means nothing is impossible, but Guangzhou aren't a favorite to win any championships. Don't let that stop you from making them your dark horse team though!
