OWL 2023 Power Rankings – #11 Dallas Fuel

A changed Dallas Fuel means a changed result.

If it ain't broke… fix it?

Dallas Fuel 2023 Roster

The 2022 Overwatch League Champions shouldn't be this low on the list, but here we are. The Dallas Fuel have not only switched up their roster since their championship win, but changed regions as well. Now in the East region, Dallas have some adapting to do. Often times, the two different regions find different versions of the meta. Both the team and the coaches are used to the Western style of deciding the meta. They look through a different lens than these Eastern teams right now. So while they may start slow, there is a chance for them to still have a good season.

Tank

  • Han-been “Hanbin” Choi

An MVP candidate in his own right, Hanbin has a lock on many Tank options for the team to run. Being that he's alone on the Tank line though means he has to cover every option. Every season he's played to this point, he's been a designated Off-Tank player. Now, he holds the responsibility of Tanks we haven't seen him play as much. Reinhardt, Winston, Orisa, characters we haven't seen him on much if at all. That being said, this is Hanbin. His skills in former seasons have earned him the benefit of the doubt. He very well may be practicing these characters, working on being a very well rounded Tank player.

Support

  • Leong-ho “MCD” Lee
  • So-myung “Bliss” Kim

For whatever reason, Dallas Fuel or their 2022 Supports decided they no longer wished to work together. This year, Dallas has opted for a decent, experienced player, and a talented Contenders player. Even still, the playstyle Fuel are used to is going to have to be toned down. The fluid team plays we're used to are going to take time to be seen again. MCD has never been the most impressive or successful player, but he's likely good enough given their frontline talent. Bliss is a talented player, but it's his first run in the league, so it'll take some time for him to adapt. Dallas likely won't come out strong, but rather build up over time, opposite of some previous seasons.

DPS

  • Yeong-han “Sp9ark1e” Kim
  • Tae-Hoon “Edison” Kim

Reliable, talented, carry potential. This DPS line proved last year that when they're at their best, they are the best. Edison stepped up so much last year, going from Atlanta's bench, to an Overwatch League Champion. Sp9ark1e is a fan favorite for a reason. He excels on some fun, less played heroes, and has been practicing more commonly meta heroes such as Tracer the last few years. They may not be the most flexible DPS lineup in the league, but what they do play, they play very well.

Coach

  • Hee-won “RUSH” Yun

Almost any other time, there would be only amazing things to say about RUSH. One of the greatest coaches of all time, top three on almost every list. There are still plenty of great things to say, but this season will be tough on him. Having to change regions means having to change the way the team functions. Playing in a different meta, analyzing new patches with a different lens. RUSH has the most work set out for him here having to prep the team for an entirely new way to play and think.

Dallas Fuel 2023 Power Ranking

They should stand of the top, but instead they stand in the middle of the pack. Massive wins nor bottom tier losses are likely to come from this team. Its back to tooth and nail for them. They'll have to make some major adjustments all around just to contend for the tournaments, which is not where you want your reigning champions to be.
