CDL 2023 Major 1 Qualifiers – Week 2; Day 1 Recap

Here’s everything that went down in the first day of the second week of the 2023 CDL season.

The Call of Duty League continued with four more matches as we got into the second week of the 2023 Call of Duty League season. We saw multiple upsets last week, with the London Royal Ravens going 2-0, alongside Boston Breach who looked incredible. Here’s a recap of every match from the first day of week two in the 2023 Call of Duty League Season.

Seattle Surge 3-1 London Royal Ravens

Seattle Surge come into week two with an 0-2 record, while the London Royal Ravens sit at the top of the Call of Duty League standings with a 2-0 record. However, with the M4 now being GA’d, we may see an improvement in all SMG players — and this could give Pred an opportunity to shine. Which is exactly what happened, as Pred completely dominated the map, putting up 28 kills with a 2.80 K/D as Seattle Surge put the Ravens in the 100-point club with a 250-68 victory. Surge constantly rotated first, but even when they didn't it was too easy to break through London, and Surge looked back to their best.

Zer0 suffered in map one, getting just 8 kills in the whole map. However he dominated map two, putting up 11 kills which featured a 10 streak during the game to earn him full streaks. The Ravens took map two 6-4 and tied the series, however there were elements of sloppiness as we say in map one, so Seattle Surge were still well and truly in this game. Coming into this series, the London Royal Ravens had a 6-0 record on Hotel Control rounds. They took this further to 8-0, before Seattle Surge pulled off an incredible comeback to win the map 3-2, and take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Map four of the series was exceptional, as both teams were at their best fighting for the victory. Seattle Surge came out on top with a 250-235 victory that could have ran away from them, however through two brilliant breaks Surge kept the map in control, and eventually went away with the map and series win.

Minnesota ROKKR 3-1 Florida Mutineers

The Florida Mutineers come into this series as massive underdogs, however they showed glimpses of brilliance in their first week of matches. In a massively contested map, Florida Mutineers came out with a 250-246 victory on Hotel Hardpoint. They were outslayed but a large number, but it was Vikul who dominated on the side of the Mutineers with 26 kills as Florida took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Minnesota ROKKR evened the series with a 6-3 Hotel Search and Destroy victory which featured some dominant rounds alongside some clutches. This sees Minnesota ROKKR continue their incredible start to the season in Search and Destroy as they appear to be ahead of the rest of the League and dominant in that game mode. Minnesota ROKKR continued into the Control taking a 3-2 victory on El Asilo to go 2-1 up in the series. This was a defence heavy map with every single win coming on the defensive side. The Mutineers clutched up and forced the round five, and they tried an interesting tactic at the beginning of the final round. However, it didn’t work out and it put them in a trap where they were obliterated by ROKKR to end the map.

Minnesota ROKKR then went on to finish the series with a 250-148 Fortress Hardpoint victory. Afro was the star of this map, putting up 29 kills and a 1.61 K/D to take the fourth map of the series and win the series 3-1, going 3-0 in Major 1 Qualifiers.

New York Subliners 3-0 Los Angeles Guerrillas

The meta change seemed to improve Seattle Surge due to their star SMG player. The New York Subliners have the same situation with HyDra. HyDra dominated this map one with the Vaznev, putting up 23 kills as he was in the face of the Guerrillas throughout the entire map, with NYSL taking a 250-133 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The New York Subliners were unorganised in their Search and Destroy gameplay last week, however this match saw a completely new NYSL team. Skyz was dominant with the sniper, and while the Los Angeles Guerrillas made it to round 11, the Subliners took the map and took a 2-0 lead in the series.

The New York Subliners showed their improvement in communication in map three, taking a 3-0 Fortress Control victory to 3-0 the series. Skyz was dominant, putting up 19 kills and a massive 2.71 K/D, while HyDra rounded out a great series for himself with an excellent map.

Toronto Ultra 3-2 Atlanta FaZe

Toronto Ultra came out hot in this map one, taking a 70 point lead starting on the bad side of Mercado. However, Atlanta FaZe came back to win the map 250-229. Toronto could have won this map, and possibly should have with an exceptional game from Standy. However, CleanX struggled, putting up just 7 kills in the entire map and possibly being the one thing that stopped Ultra from taking map one.

While Atlanta FaZe had the 1-0 lead, Toronto Ultra bounced back to tie the series with a round 11 victory on El Asilo Search and Destroy. CleanX came back from his poor map one with a good performance in the map two, however it was Standy yet again who dominated, putting up 14 kills and a 2.00 K/D, the highest in the lobby. Scrappy also had an excellent game, earning full streaks in the early rounds.

Scrappy was loud following map three as Toronto Ultra dominated the El Asilo Control with a 3-0 victory. Scrappy dropped 19 kills in the map, while Standy put up 21 with a 1.50 K/D as they allowed Atlanta FaZe nowhere near the points, and clutched up when needed to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Map four in this series was undoubtedly the best Hardpoint we have seen all year. The Hotel Hardpoint ended 250-249 in favour of Atlanta FaZe as they somehow managed to break through Ultra’s setup on the final hill and collect the remaining three points they needed for the victory. Ultra looked much improved on map one, but once again struggled to close out the map.

Toronto Ultra seemed to bully Atlanta FaZe in map five as they took a 6-2 victory on Fortress Search and Destroy. Toronto continue to look good in SnD throughout the season, and could once again be a dark horse team this year.
