CDL 2023 Major 2 – Day 1 Recap

Here’s a recap of the first day of CDL 2023 Major 2.

The Call of Duty League returned to LAN as we went to Boston for the second Major of the 2023 season. With four great matches, here’s all the action from day one of CDL 2023 Major 2 in Boston.

Minnesota ROKKR 3-2 New York Subliners

The New York Subliners and the Minnesota Rokkr opened the first match of Major 2 in the CDL 2023

The New York Subliners took on Minnesota ROKKR in the first match of Major 2. Surprisingly, Minnesota ROKKR decided to challenge NYSL on Hotel, arguably NYSL’s favourite and best map. This didn’t work out for Minnesota ROKKR as they suffered a 250-153 Hotel Hardpoint loss with Kismet and Hydra dominating as usual, putting up 23 and 27 kills respectively as the SMG duo.

Minnesota ROKKR got back in the series with a 6-4 Hotel Search and Destroy to tie the series 1-1. Minnesota ROKKR controlled this Search and Destroy perfectly, and as NYSL began to make their way back into the map ROKKR clutched up and closed out the second map of the series 6-4. As expected, Minnesota ROKKR took a 2-1 lead in this series through a 3-2 El Asilo Control victory. ROKKR have been great at this map all season, and while the Subliners brought it close, it was the 33 kills and 1.57 K/D from Bance that saw Minnesota take the map.

Yet again in a result that everyone saw coming, the New York Subliners took a 234-184 victory. This was the first Hardpoint that has ended via the time clock this year, and saw NYSL force a map five with brilliant performances from Priestahh and Hydra who both put up 35 kills in this map four. Minnesota ROKKR closed out this series with a 6-5 Embassy Search and Destroy seeing them take the round 11 to win their first match at CDL Major 2.

Atlanta FaZe 3-2 Boston Breach

Boston Breach came out hot in map one at their own Major event, with a dominant 250-199 victory on Fortress Hardpoint. Nero was exceptional in this first match on LAN as he put up 35 kills and a 1.46 K/D as Boston Breach took a 1-0 lead in this crucial series. However, Atlanta FaZe were able to rebound in the series and tie it up 1-1 with a 6-2 Embassy Search and Destroy victory. Abezy was running the show in map two, putting up 10 kills and a 2.50 K/D as Atlanta FaZe levelled the series and looked to take the lead in the next Control.

A reverse sweep in the map three Control saw Boston Breach come out with a 3-2 El Asilo Control victory to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Vivid and Owakening both put up 32 kills in this map as Boston Breach completely turned around the momentum and executed the reverse sweep in Control. However, Atlanta FaZe dominated the following two maps, securing a 250-105 Mercado Hardpoint and a flawless El Asilo Search and Destroy to close out the series. In our post match press conference, Slasher said that he ‘expected more’ from the Boston crowd, and was not phased at all by the minor hostility.

Toronto Ultra 3-1 Los Angeles Guerrillas

Toronto Ultra came out fast in map one with a 250-160 Hotel Hardpoint to kick off the series. Hotel has been a great map for the Ultra so far in this season, and this map one was no different. However, Assault suffered on the side of the Guerrillas, putting up just 9 kills in the entire map as the squad found themselves 1-0 down in the series. Toronto Ultra continued to dominate in this series with a 6-4 Mercado Search and Destroy victory to take a 2-0 lead in the series. CleanX was dominant in the final round, picking up three kills as he ran through the Los Angeles Guerrillas roster and sent his team to series point.

The Los Angeles Guerrillas stopped the 3-0 with a 3-2 Fortress Control victory. They found themselves 2-1 down in this map, but managed to claw back into the game and close it out 3-2 with a great round 5 offensive win. Unsurprisingly, Toronto Ultra closed out the series with a 250-128 Fortress Hardpoint win. Toronto Ultra continue to impress and look like one of the best teams in the game, possibly being favourites for the Major.

OpTic Texas 3-2 LA Thieves

Optic and LA Thieves faced off at the Major 2 in the CDL 2023

The LA Thieves have struggled with some issues heading into Major 2, with Kenny having to be subbed out for a whole week of qualifiers and struggling to scrim. However, they came into this series with confidence, and dominated the first map. A 250-179 Mercado Hardpoint win saw the LA Thieves take a 1-0 series lead and look great heading into the Search and Destroy. OpTic Texas however came back into this series with a quick and easy 6-1 Mercado Search and Destroy win. The OpTic roster was excellent here, and they all put in an even shift to tie the series 1-1.

LA Thieves took a 2-1 lead in this series through a 3-2 Hotel Control victory. The Thieves clutched up in the final round to take this map, with a great performance from Octane throughout as he ended map three with 31 kills and a 1.63 K/D, topping the lobby as the Thieves went to series point. An incredible comeback from OpTic Texas in map four saw them tie the series 2-2 and force a game five. Here, Dashy topped the leaderboard once again with 13 big kills as OpTic Texas took a 6-4 El Asilo Search and Destroy win to close out the series 3-2.
