SumaiL Shares Fun Insights into How He Communicates with Aster

Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan is a Pakistani player in a Chinese-dominated Team Aster roster, so he needs to get creative to work around the language barrier

Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan has been deputizing for Team Aster’s regular midlaner Zhai “xwy” Jingkai at the Berlin Major 2023, as the Chinese team moved him to the inactive roster before the tournament began.

SumaiL is one of the most accomplished players currently active in the Dota 2 scene and has five Tier 1 gold medals to show in his cabinet. The Pakistani Dota star, however, has not played in a DPC Major event for a while. His last Major appearance dates back to June 2021, when he pulled on the Team Liquid shirt at the WePlay AniMajor as a stand-in. SumaiL has been having a bit of trouble communicating with his new teammates since they don’t speak the same language. The lingual limitations, nonetheless, did not hamper his Dota 2 prowess as he helped Team Aster to qualify for the Berlin Major playoffs.

How Is SumaiL Dealing With The Communication Issues At Aster?

In a recent interview, SumaiL shed light on the language barriers he encountered while playing with Team Aster. He admitted that while communicating about certain aspects of the game, like objective calls, was easy, he found clutch moments, such as team fights and spellcasting, to be a little tricky.

MISERY Is The New Bleed Esports Dota 2 Coach

“We're 90% confident, let's see what happens. I think the bigger parts of the game, objective calls have been really simple. But clutch moments, such as team fighting or spellcasting and stuff have been a little difficult.”

The Nigma Galaxy star believes that the team is becoming more cohesive with each passing game. Language difficulty did not hold them back much.

“Yeah, you just gotta use the Dota knowledge to actually decide how to team fight without saying much because, in team fights, there is so much to be said.”

SumaiL also revealed his communication strategy with Aster, which does come off as a bit hilarious.

“I went home, and then I got a message from Mo that Aster might want to play with me. I said okay, I wanna play the Major, it's been like 2 years. I say Jia You then we have to go in, and then I use “Get Back” on the chat wheel, and then we have to get back. And when I mistake, I use “Sorry” on the chat wheel.”

Team Aster have been putting up an impressive performance at The Berlin Major despite facing language problems. SumaiL doesn’t speak Chinese, but he has lived up to expectations and been instrumental in Team Aster securing a lower-bracket playoff spot in the competition. Overcoming the communication barrier was a big challenge for the team, but till now, they have shown excellent professionalism to adapt to the situation. SumaiL has been an invaluable asset to the team and they will hope the midlaner holds on to his stellar form for the remainder of the competition.
