FlyQuest Starts the 2023 LCS Playoffs Strong With a Victory Over 100 Thieves

100 Thieves will continue their playoff journey in the lower bracket against GG this weekend.

The 2023 LCS Playoffs started out with one of the most exciting matchups, FlyQuest vs. 100T. Coming into the series both teams were on decent form, but 100 Thieves especially was on the back of a seven-game win streak to end the regular season.

For the game, most eyes were on the bot lane where the LCS veteran Doublelift faced off against the young incoming star bot laner Prince. Both teams relied a lot on their ADCs in the regular season to close out games, so both the bot lane draft and how teams were going to play toward this lane were going to be crucial.

100 Thieves co-owner and former CoD caster  Jack “CouRage” Dunlop joined the broadcast as a guest caster for the day.

FlyQuest vs. 100T Game 1

Interesting drafts started out in Game 1 as VicLa busted out his Veigar as a blind pick and Bjergsen’s answer was his classic Zilean.

FlyQuest also came in with a very aggressive level-one strategy, invading Closer and putting him massively behind. Spica’s early lead did not lead to any kills, but they were able to secure all early objectives. And after 100T took an unadvised fight over a scuttle crab in the bot lane river and got cleaned up by FlyQuest, the gold lead jumped to 4k in a blink. 100T tried to go for a couple of side lane picks to get themselves back into the game, but FlyQuest answered every play with their own. With most of the early kills going to VicLa’s Veigar, 100T had trouble fighting the enemy and had to give up a 22-minute Baron after another lost fight.

The first Baron siege led to FlyQuest taking three inhibitors in the 100T base. With the base fully open, they did not need any other Baron or the Soul to end the game. They just lured 100T to a fight around mid lane and aced them to take the 1-0 lead in the series.

FlyQuest vs. 100T Game 2

Despite the loss in the previous game, 100T decided to stick with the red side and drafted a very similar comp, but this time FlyQuest matched their scaling with a Zeri/Lulu bot lane.

No level-one invade to put him behind this time around, Closer had a much better early game and was able to find the first blood in the bot lane along with the first drake. They were also able to put Doublelift massively ahead with good map movement and a great Herald play. This time around it was FlyQuest who were taking bad fights and the kills kept going to the 100T ADC. The Thieves also did a good job of peeling for their carry and FlyQuest wasn’t able to kill him in fights. 

But 100T never established a significant gold lead on anyone but Doublelift, even after a Baron and the Ocean Soul. So when Doublelift died first in two fights, FlyQuest aced them easily and got an Elder Drake as a reward. With the gold lead swung toward them, Impact and Spica were massive in teamfights at diving the enemy backline. Fight after fight they assassinated the enemy carries, and the last 5v5 in the second Elder Drake just ended the game.

FlyQuest vs. 100T Game 3

It’s almost another salty runback for 100T as their bot lane picks Jinx/Thresh third game in a row. FlyQuest was also happy to bring back VicLa’s Veigar from Game 1.

Second game in a row 100 Thieves started out with an advantage as they got multiple early kills. But once again, they threw their small lead after a failed dive in the bot lane. FlyQuest almost returned the favor with a bad fight and an overextended Prince, but a drake steal from Spica kept them in the game. It was once again the Veigar pick that was the crucial part of FlyQuest’s gameplan, as VicLa’s area control made it impossible for 100T to contest objectives. 100T made their last stand at the Soul Drake, but it wasn’t even close as FlyQuest found a clean ace to finish the series 3-0.
