Zelda Tears of the Kingdom – Everything You Need to Know

We finally have some footage for Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and it looks amazing!

When we all first heard and saw Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, most were afraid it would just be a content update for Breath of the Wild. How would you even follow up on Breath of the Wilds' freedom and sense of wonder? Turns out you just make Breath of the Wild³.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

We're not joking! There are now islands dotting the skyline of a familiar, yet different Hyrule. Links' arsenal has also received a considerable upgrade.

Remember how everyone hated the weapon durability in Breath of the Wild because it forced players to improvise with what they had? Now you can and have to build your own weapons and equipment.

In the video, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom producer Eiji Aonuma combined a stick with a rock to make a hammer. He also showed off a combination of a mushroom and shield that produced a smokescreen after being hit. Which he then used to perform a special sneak attack with added damage.

The extent of possibilities even goes as far as combining a monster eye with an arrow to create a homing arrow. And from the looks of it, players will be able to combine anything with everything. Enemies will also be able to combine objects, as seen with one new enemy type using a door to create a gigantic fan.

Traversal has also seen some extensions, while you can still catch and ride a horse. You'll also be able to make use of the environment more. Occasionally, objects will fall out of the sky, Link can then reverse time on them via Sheikah Slate to ascend to the heavens.

He also has the ability to just slip through any sort of solid matter above him. The Link entered a cave in the video and was able to just swim up to the top of the mountain with his new abilities. This will cut down on time spent trying to McGyver your way up mountains and cliffs considerably.

Speaking of being McGyver, that ability to combine items to create weapons also extends to other objects in the world. You can build yourself a little dingy to sail the lakes rivers and sea, even put a sail up or motorize it. Or you combine them into a fully functioning airship! You can even build a car apparently.

But those are powered by batteries. So you'll have to find resources to feed those and so on and so forth. We're looking forward to someone building a floating fortress or what other contraptions people will come up with.

They didn't show much else, but knowing that much of the world of Breath of Wild will return in some shape or form makes this exciting. It seems that the team at Nintendo really honed in on the sandbox for Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and offers players an environment to experiment and play around in.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

We'll have to wait a little longer to find out what the story is about, we can only tell from trailers that the story will take Link above and below Hyrule to combat Ganon's forces. It'll probably tie into the ancient legends and mysteries teased in Breath of the Wild. Maybe we'll even find out if Ganon is really all that evil, to begin with.

And we'll yet have to find out how Zelda Tears of the Kingdom ties into the greater canon of the Legend of Zelda, even if the games are only closely connected to each other.

You just have to wait a little bit longer, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12, 2023, for the Nintendo Switch. And we'll keep you up to date on anything Zelda here on ESTNN
