Warhammer 40k Leviathan Starter Box: Whats in the 10th Edition Starter Set?

A blast from the past alongside some great new models, the first big box of Warhammer 40k’s 10th Edition is one that will run out of stock very fast.
Last weekend, Warhammer Fest 2023 took place in Manchester, and boy was it a great three days for the fans of all things Games Workshop: The Golden Demon painting contest was held, we have some new and exciting info about 10th Edition, and during the first day of the event, Games Workshop revealed the context of the Edition’s Starter Box, Leviathan – and now we’re even more hyped than before.
The Contents of the Warhammer 40k Leviathan Starter Box
The Leviathan will be a Warhammer 40k kit worth to its name: it will include more than 70 (!!!) Games Workshop minis, 25 for the Space Marines defending the Imperium of Man against the ever-hungry Tyranids, of which we get 47, which is more than enough to swarm our opponents on the tabletop.
Alongside the Warhammer miniatures, fans can get their hands on the new and exclusive Warhammer 40k Leviathan Rulebook, which contains the lore of the new war between humanity and the Tyranids, beautiful artwork and photos of the new models and the concept arts, some information about every 40k faction outside of the two in the box, and the most important: the rules of the new edition of Warhammer 40,000!
If you’re more of a lore enthusiast, Leviathan got you covered with the novel of the same name included in the box as well. Written by Darius Hinks, Leviathan tells the tale of the Fourth Tyrannic War, and the Ultramarines fight against Hive Fleet Leviathan, so players can fully immerse themselves in the new chapter of the story.
But of course, the most anticipated parts of the box are the miniatures, and Space Marine and Tyranid players will be eating good after the new Edition drops. Let’s look at all the miniatures of the Leviathan Starter Box!
The Space Marines of the Warhammer 40k Leviathan Starter Box
The Space Marine side of the 10th Edition Starter Kit is a Captain in Terminator Armour – but not just any armour, as this stalwart leader is clad in Tactical Dreadnought Armour. His second in command is a Librarian in Terminator Armour, a powerful psyker who is extremely durable thanks to his high defenses, but can dish out some serious damage in the Shooting Phase (as the Psychic Phase will disappear in the new Edition).
The Apothecary Biologis is the one trying to understand the Tyranid threat in the storm of the battlefield, and he has a Gravis Armour to help him survive the ordeals with the giant bugs. The last standalone Space Marine miniature of this box is the Lieutenant in Phobos Armour showcased when the first teasers of the new Edition started to drop, and he serves as a perfect disruptor and infiltrator for the brave Astartes.
Of course, they will need some more boots on the ground if they want toe exterminate the Tyranids, but Leviathan got us covered in that department as well. Alongside the characters come a Sternguard Veteran Squad which is a devastating long-range unit with special ammunition and weapons. The deep striking will be done by the renewed Terminators, who can either lead the charge or teleport to their homer in order to wreak havoc in the back lines. The Infernus Squad will scorch everything in their path, so no xeno can be safe from the flames of the Emperor’s Justice. And if all this firepower is not enough, the Ultramarines are accompanied by a Ballistus Dreadnought, who will rain hell upon the ‘Nids with his missile launcher – while also looking extremely good, as this model has been updated as well.
The Tyranids of the Warhammer 40k Leviathan Starter Box
On the other side of the Leviathan Box is the endless swarm of Tyranids, who are hungry for biomass. Leading the horde is a Winged Tyranid Prime, a twist on the existing Tyranid Prime model, who will be able to pick out targets from they sky. Channelling the Shadow in the Warp, the Neurotyrant will be relaying the Hive Mind’s commands to the swarm, accompanied by his lesser nodes.
An homage to the classic miniature, the new Screamer-Killer model is looking to strike fear into the brave Marine’s hearts – and this specialized Carnifex is certainly terrifying, and an awesome miniature which makes getting the Leviathan Box an even sweeter deal. Last, but not least of the standalone models is the Psychophage, a Venomcrawler-looking ‘Nid, who has a very special appetite: they like to consume Psykers to fire devastating volleys towards enemy gunlines.
Starting off with the models which players get more then one of is the Von Ryan’s Leapers, which are a unique type of Deathleapers looking to strike before the enemy even notices them. Of course, no Tyranid army can be whole without a blob of Termagants, and the Leviathan Box gives 20 of them alongside 2 models of Ripper Swarms to whole those back objectives and be generally annoying for enemies to deal with.
Along with the classic Termagants, a new type of Gaunt comes with the box: the Neurogaunts have a parasite on their back which helps them keep the Synapse network intact, letting the Shadow in the Warp coordinate the attack of the swarm. The Neurogaunts are not the only new type of Gaunt though, as the Barbgaunts joined the fray as the living artillery of the Tyranid armies. They also have a parasite on their back, but instead of communication, they specialize in heavy fire, which should come in handy against the extremely tough vehicles of the 10th Edition.
When does the Leviathan Starter Box Release?
Overall, the Leviathan Starter Box lives up to a new, landmark edition of Warhammer 40,000. With some amazing new models, both Tyranid and Space Marine players can refresh their armies – but as Games Workshop said, they won’t be the only ones getting some new toys. The release date of the Leviathan Starter Box is the same as the new Edition’s, but GW didn’t tell us an exact date yet, only that the new goodies drop at the end of June – which is only a few weeks away, so we don’t have to wait too much for one of the greatest releases in 40k history!
