Fallout 1 & 2 Open Source Now Playable On Mobile Devices

War never changes, but the devices it takes place on do.

Modders never cease being the greatest unsung heroes of gaming. They extend, revitalize, or create countless enjoyable gaming experiences. Fallout is no exception.

We're far enough into the timeline that some people consider playing Fallout 3 or New Vegas classic Fallout gaming. The Interplay era Fallout games are the equivalent of Morrowind in the Fallout franchise, and many modern gamers find them unapproachable. But thanks to one Alex Batalov, anyone who can muster up the courage to try out classic Fallout will have a much easier time.

Available on his GitHub page, Batalov has released open-source versions of Fallout 1 and 2 (2 seems to be less stable and complete than 1, at least for the moment). He reverse-engineered the games' original source codes and rewrote them in C++. Both are available natively on numerous platforms. This now opens the door to many creative opportunities for Fallout 1 and 2. But the biggest win here being you can now play classic Fallout on mobile devices. While it was already possible to do so via emulators, this should be a more stable experience.

Dubbed Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 Community Editions, you'll need to own Fallout 1 and 2 on Steam or GOG to play them. You likely nabbed Fallout 1 and 2 for free from Epic Games' 15 Days of Free Games Event, but those copies won't work. But you're in luck, as both Fallout 1 and 2 are currently on sale in GOG's We Love Gaming Sale.
