2023 LCS Spring Split Week 5 Day 2: Cloud9 Get Their First Win With EMENES on the Roster

Cloud9 bounced back from yesterday’s loss and got their first victory with EMENES.

Day 2 of the second half of the 2023 LCS Spring Split started out with TSM vs C9, which was the redemption game for C9’s new mid laner EMENES after he did not deliver in his hyped debut. After dominating the NACL this split, the Korean mid laner replaced Diplex, despite C9 starting the split with a 7-2 record. While the expectation was for him to carry over the same performance, his first game was a bit of a letdown.

The other two big games of the day were GG vs EG and 100T vs TL. Both matchups were between two teams with similar trajectories. GG currently has the longest win streak in the LCS, they won their last six, and with their recent victory over C9, the eyes were on this EG game to see if they are a real contender. On the other side, both TL and 100T were underperforming relative to the preseason expectations coming into the day, and the losing team in this game would be heavily disadvantaged in the playoffs race.

TSM vs C9

C9 came into the game with an interesting game plan. With Elise priority on the rise and TSM first picking it, they responded with Rengar. This was the first Rengar pick in major leagues in 2023, but it made a couple of appearances in the NACL.

Blaber even started with a bot side invade to alleviate early pressure from his bot lane. Still, Bugi was able to get the first blood on Zven, but C9 answered well with three kills at the first Herald fight. The C9 mid/jungle duo looked much better with both of them on assassins. They were more aggressive and much more active around the map looking for plays. EMENES was especially putting on a show on his LeBlanc. He shut down any attempt TSM made to get back into the game. And with C9 securing a very early Baron on top of their massive gold lead, they didn’t have to wait for the Soul and they were able to easily end the game.

IMT vs CLG

Not the greatest start for IMT as they spent a lot of early resources around the bot lane, but still gave up the first blood and the first drake due to a good counter gank from Contractz. The early fights were close, but CLG kept getting the better of it with the smallest margins. But over time, the small margins added up for a big gold lead for CLG, along with control over the map and the drakes. IMT did their best to fight their way back into the game but two major losses at the Baron and the Soul let CLG secure both objectives, and the game started to look lost for IMT. Their last shot was at the second Baron, but a good Teleport flank from Dhokla meant an ace and the victory for CLG.

GG vs EG

River continued his excellent form during the six-game win streak in this early game as well. He was everywhere around the map either ganking or answering EG’s plays. Despite the Geniuses drafting a more early game focused comp, GG mid/jungle completely neutralized them. With River stealing the second drake, GG was able to secure a very fast Ocean Soul to go along with their 5k gold lead. They almost threw the game once by overextending in the enemy jungle and giving over a couple of kills to Jax, also the Baron to EG. But their lead was too big combined with the Soul and they managed to win the deciding fight before the Elder to keep their win streak alive.

100T vs TL

Not much action to start except a bot lane dive from the Thieves, but TL was able to answer it with a great roam from Summit’s Sion. Other than the dive, most of the early game was teams farming and trading objectives. While TL had a slight gold lead, 100T had one more drake in their pocket. But the game state somewhat changed after 100T’s two veterans made two back-to-back mistakes, and TL was able to take a Baron and extend their gold lead.

With the Soul getting delayed to the last possible drake, TL couldn’t take advantage of their mid game spike with Sylas and Sion ahead and 100T carries were able to scale. Eventually, both Viktor and Zeri reached full items, and 100T was able to force a couple of fights and find the win to end their losing streak.

DIG vs FLY

After getting their first win of the 2023 LCS Spring yesterday, DIG already had a big job ahead of them facing the best team in the league. But the disastrous start to the game definitely did not help their cause. A failed invade from Santorin gave away the first blood and two more kills to the FLY, while the DIG bot lane lost a 2v2 on the other side. With the gold lead nearing 3k at five minutes, the game looked already lost.

All DIG could do after that point on was keep taking fights and hope for a miracle. Unfortunately for them, FLY is not the opponent you want to rely on miracles. The fights did not go DIG’s way, except for one or two kills, and FLY did a good job of snowballing. The game went on way too long as FLY seemed to be having too much fun, but their victory was never in doubt.
