StarCraft: Shopify Enters Esports With Shopify Rebellion

The ecommerce giant enters esports with their own Starcraft 2 roster.

Canadian ecommerce giant Shopify announced their interest in the esports scene back in September 2020; when they appointed Dario Wünsch as esports program manager. Back then, not much was known about Shopify's intentions in esports. But today they have announced their first venture, a Starcraft 2 roster.

Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn, “ByuN” Hyun Woo and Julian “Lambo” Brosig join the Starcraft 2 roster, looking to bring championships back to Rebellion. While most companies will sponsor a team in esports, Shopify have done things differently. They're heading straight into building their own brand.

For their branding, Shopify Rebellion called on Paper Crowns, creators of the recent CDL Pick’em. This allows them to enter esports with the face of a team that has been here for years, rather than looking like an outsider. While Rebellion are only competing in Starcraft 2 as of now, Shopify have detailed their interest in competing in multiple other esports in the future.
