All There Is To Know About TFT Set 8 Traits, Champions and Set Mechanics So Far

As we keep getting closer to TFT: Monsters Attack! on PBE, more and more details about the new set are getting revealed.

TFT Set 8: Monsters Attack will go live with the League of Legends patch 12.23, which is scheduled on December 7. This means Set 8 should also be available on Public Beta Environment (PBE) one patch earlier, around mid-November. And while in the past, Riot waited till a day or two before PBE to release detailed information about new sets, we have a lot more information coming out a lot earlier for Set 8.

The dev team has been tweeting about some of the new traits coming to the TFT Set 8 for the last couple of days. We also had a new article from Rodger “Riot Prism” Caudill about more detailed information on champions and set mechanics. So here is what we know about the TFT Set 8 so far.

The battle of heroes and villains

The new set mechanic for Set 8 will not be as big as the augments’ introduction in Set 6, but it will be integrated with the augments, which are here the stay from now on. The big mechanic of the set is the “Threat” champions. This handful of champions will be much more powerful compared to the rest of the set’s roster, but they will not have any trait synergies, which can allow people to use Threats as splash units to complement their comp.

With these Threats acting as the set’s villains, the players will need some heroes. The other set mechanic will be the new “Hero Augments,” which will let players choose a champion and essentially make them the main character of their team. Each champion in the set, even the Threats, will have two unique Hero Augments available to them. One more carry-oriented and one supportive.

Players will see more Hero Augments for 1-2 costs in stage two, 2-3 costs in stage three and 3-4 costs for stage four. 5-cost unit Augments can also be seen at stage 4-2, but they will be very rare. To guarantee the balancing between all player options, everyone in the lobby will see Augments for the same cost, semi-tailored for their board, and every Augment will give a copy of that champion. While there will be a lot of different Augment options in the game, we only know a couple of them at the moment.

  • Gangplank, 1-cost, Get Paid
    • Gangplank’s supportive Augment has an econ twist that’ll have players living out the pirate fantasy of collecting piles o’ gold.
    • “When Gangplank or his allies kill an enemy, they have a 25% chance to drop 2 gold. Gain a Gangplank.”
  • Yasuo, 2-cost, Spirit of the Exile
    • This support Augment allows your whole team to live the lone samurai’s edgelord fantasy.
    • “Yasuo and his allies gain 25% Attack Speed if they start combat with no adjacent allies. Gain a Yasuo.”
  • Jinx, 2-cost, Get Excited!
    • Classic Jinx gets a classic carry Hero Augment.
    • “When Jinx gets a takedown, she gains 100% bonus Attack and Move Speed for 5 seconds. Gain a Jinx.”
  • Nilah, 3-cost, Gifted
    • Nilah’s carry Hero Augment proves that sharing is carrying.
    • “Nilah gains 30 AP. At the start of combat, your strongest Nilah grants her nearest ally a temporary copy of one of her items. Gain a Nilah.”
  • Nilah, 3-cost, Jubilant Veil
    • Nilah’s supportive Augment is the perfect choice to protect your other frontline Duelist carries.
    • “At the start of combat, your strongest Nilah grants herself and allies within 1 hex in the same row immunity to crowd control for 20 seconds. Gain a Nilah.”
  • Bel’Veth, 4-cost, Voidmother
    • Bel’Veth’s flex Augment overwhelms your foe with distracting (and destructive) Voidspawns.
    • “At the start of combat, your strongest Bel'Veth creates 2 Voidspawns with 75% Health nearby. Gain a Bel'Veth.”
  • Zed, 4-cost, Contempt for the Weak
    • With Zed’s supportive Augment, everyone becomes a mobile reset machine!
    • “Zed grants all allies Attack Speed. Upon takedown, they dash to a new target, tripling this bonus for 2.5 seconds. Gain a Zed.”
  • Syndra, 5-cost, Empowered Reserves
    • Syndra’s supportive Augment is a cross between the Cluttered Mind Augment and Preparation. It rewards hectic benches by synergizing with Syndra’s ability to throw benched units into play.
    • “At the start of combat, Syndra, her allies, and your benched units gain 5 bonus Ability Power for each unit on your bench. Gain a Syndra.”

New traits and origins in TFT Monsters Attack!

  • Threat: Field as many as you want, but these monsters will not gain any extra bonuses; they are powerful enough on their own.
  • Star Guardian: When Star Guardians would gain Mana, they gain even more as a bonus.
  • Underground: When this trait is active, champions begin a loot heist, hoarding items and gold. At any point, players can choose to take the loot and run, or keep going for better rewards.
  • A.D.M.I.N: Create your own trait! A.D.M.I.N configuration varies for each player in each game, adding additional effects and increasing overall effect potency at higher levels.
  • Anima Squad: When an Anima Squad champion gets a takedown, they also gain a stack of “Fame.” Each stack of Fame gives these units AP and AD.
  • Ox Force: No specific detail, but in the video Mortdog made it sound like these units will have some sort of death-defying mechanic.
  • Gadgeteen: Every round, Gadgeteens generate a random modified weapon. These weapons are powerful but not durable and fall apart after two rounds of use.
  • Spellslinger: Thriving in the heat of battle, Spellslingers gain additional Ability Power and empower their next attack after casting a spell, dealing a portion of their AP as magic damage.
  • Heart: When Heart units cast their spell, all allies gain stacking Ability Power for the rest of combat.
  • Hacker: Hackers summon a H4ckerr!m that takes a unit into the enemy backline and makes them untargetable for the first few seconds of combat.
  • Lasercorps: All Lasercorps agents are assigned a combat drone. When basic attacking or being hit by a basic attack, the drone has a chance to deal magic damage to the agent’s target.
  • Duelist: Duelists’ basic attacks grant them bonus attack speed.
  • Mech: No details yet.
