A Halo Infinite Battle Royale Mode is Reportedly in Development

The Xbox Two Podcast unearths details regarding a Halo Battle Royale that has been in the works for over two years.

Last year, 343 Industries finally unveiled the long-awaited latest installment to the beloved Halo franchise. The Halo series became an instant classic under Bungie Studios, which helmed the first six entries. 343 Industries — a Microsoft subsidiary — took control of the Halo franchise in 2011. Fans were split on the series' direction, but many of Halo's crucial gameplay elements and characters remained intact.

Halo Infinite arrived in 2021 following a six-year hiatus. The game's fan base was eager, considering how much time 343 Industries had to churn out an excellent product. Unfortunately, many felt Infinite was incomplete, citing a lackluster multiplayer experience and no co-op campaign from the outset. On top of these criticisms, the community at large hoped to see 343 dip into the Battle Royale genre.

While this was not the case, details have recently come to light regarding a Halo Infinite Battle Royale mode. Thus far, the intel indicates a planned season three release for the Halo BR many have been calling for.

The Xbox Two Podcast Details Halo Battle Royale

Xbox Two Podcast hosts Jez and Rand revealed the information Halo Infinite fans sought. You can fast forward to the 2:15:00 mark to listen to a complete breakdown. Furthermore, a Redditor by the name of RoyaltyXIII provided a bulleted list of talking points on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit:

  • Is a battle royale
  • Been in development for over 2 years
  • Is a huge deal. Considers it a Warzone/separate game undertaking
  • Goal is to bring in new players into the Halo franchise
  • Targeting Fortnite/Warzone/Apex audience
  • Believes its targeting season 3 or 4
  • Also ties into Forge mode (maybe like Fortnite Creative? [my speculation])
  • They brought in Certain Affinity for this specific mode, “don't think they're going to ignore the rest of the game”

Could a BR Mode Save Halo Infinite?

This new game mode could make or break the Halo franchise's future by all accounts. It's no secret that Battle Royale titles dominate viewership across Twitch and YouTube, with the likes of Fortnite, Warzone and Apex Legends atop the food chain. Halo's struggles on these streaming platforms have been well-documented over the last few months. Last month, Jake Lucky of Full Squad Gaming said it best with a tweet, “Halo Infinite is in desperate need of something… like anything.”

Certain Affinity Joins 343 for Halo Infinite Development

The criticisms of Halo Infinite and 343 Industries extend beyond media to professional and casual players. Infinite's ranked mode leaves a lot to be desired, and fans of the series desperately want answers and improvement. 343 recently enlisted the help of Certain Affinity—a Texas-based game developer known for its work on various Call of Duty and Halo titles.

The pieces are beginning to fall into place as Certain Affinity recently committed to developing Halo Infinite further. All signs point to Certain Affinity playing an instrumental role in the upcoming Halo BR. 343 and Certain Affinity have yet to comment on the rumors that have taken on a life of their own.
