Louisiana online sports betting: Is It Legal?

Yes. Sports betting is currently legal in 56 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes. Louisiana's regulators and sportsbooks worked hard to get online sports betting approved in time for the 2022 Super Bowl. On January 28th, 2022, their efforts were finally rewarded when several sports betting apps went live.

Louisiana had already made significant progress with retail sportsbooks before the online sports betting launch. Some casinos such as Boomtown Bossier City Casino, Golden Nugget Lake Charles Hotel and Casino, Boomtown New Orleans Casino, Horseshoe Bossier City, Harrah’s New Orleans, Margaritaville Resort Casino, etc., had retail betting licenses to operate in the state.

Now that online sports betting is legal within its borders, this will definitely save Louisiana sports betting enthusiasts the extra trip to Mississippi or Arkansas.

That being said, sports betting itself was legalized by the voters of 55 of the 64 parishes in the state back in 2020. The nine parishes that didn't approve sports betting were:

  • Catahoula
  • Winn
  • LaSalle
  • Union
  • Sabine
  • West Carroll
  • Caldwell
  • Jackson
  • Franklin

Residents of Jackson Parish were very close, but the votes still didn't pass the required 50%. While if you are in one of those states you can create an account, deposit, or withdraw, you can't place bets. To do it you need to travel to a parish with legal sports betting.

The first casino to take a legal wager was Harrah's casinos in Bossier City and New Orleans on the 31st of October 2021. One day later Penn National Gaming started taking bets in two of their five locations in the state. Since then, many operators have opened physical sportsbooks in the state, and among them are some of the most popular operators in the country right now – DraftKings and FanDuel.

There have been rumors regarding an upcoming launch date for online sports betting in Louisiana and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board officially confirmed them. The chairman of the board Ronnie Johns said “'This is going to be a huge deal for the weekend with NFL championship games coming up.”

He said that this Friday (28th of January) at 8 AM CT, the board would issue temporary licenses to some operators ahead of the NFL Conference Championship games this weekend.

Neighboring states Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas don't have any form of online betting legalized, but the Magnolia State does have retail sportsbooks since 2018. Still, Louisiana would be the first state in the region to make mobile/online wagering possible.

What can Louisiana Bettors Wager On?

Like in any other state there are specifics regarding Louisiana sports betting you should be aware of. We think it's safe to assume that everyone who registers on a wagering platform has to be at least 21 years old. The next thing bettors will then have to know is - the approved games they can place wagers on. We think all NCAA Divisions will be approved and bettors should also be able to bet on Louisiana college events in the following sports:

  • Football
  • Softball
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Hockey
  • Lacrosse

Which other online sportsbooks do we expect will go live in Louisiana?

This is a huge step for online sports betting in Louisiana and on Friday (January 28th, 2022) we saw 6 sportsbooks go live in the morning - they are Caesars, BetMGM, Barstool, DraftKings, BetRivers, and FanDuel. There are even some pre-launch welcome offers available for you to check out. Earlier this week on Tuesday, WynnBet announced that users can pre-register on their platform in Louisiana anticipating the launch.

Are More Sportsbooks Launching in the Pelican State Soon?

The six operators we mentioned probably won't be the only ones available in the Pelican State. In the next few weeks, other operators plan to launch in the state, including Golden Nugget. With the tax levels in the state so low, we expect many brands to either open physical locations or launch mobile betting platforms. Sportsbooks will only have to pay a 15% tax rate on online wagers and a 10% tax rate on in-person bets. Experts estimate that there could be a total of forty-one operators in Louisiana, including the Louisiana Lottery. The rest of the list is made up of the twenty brick-and-mortar locations in the state, which are allowed to have two digital skins.

Louisiana Sports Betting Offers Available

Top sportsbooks have already released offers for customers and will continue to offer even more bonuses to new customers.

Betfred Pre-Launch Bonus

Betfred customers in Louisiana who register before launching could potentially receive a $150 free bet once the operator is live in the state.

WynnBet Promotion Available

WynnBet can enter the Louisiana sports betting market via the Bossier City Hotel and Casino. Their press release stated that they are offering a “Bet $10, Win $250” promotion to everyone who decides to use their services.

Summary of Louisiana Online Sports Betting Launch

Experts expect at least five or six operators to launch in the first days of legalization of mobile wagering in Louisiana, but in the coming weeks, there could be many more of them since each physical location can have two skins under the same license. It would be an interesting race to see which sportsbook will launch first and which will have to wait a while before that happens.
