A State of the Game Update

Along with the crossover's announcement came a special behind-the-scenes with the developers of Overwatch 2. In their “Dev Chat” livestream,  Game Director Aaron Keller, Art Director Dion Rogers, and Senior Artist Rakan Khamash all sat down with Community Lead Jodie Mckoughan to discuss Overwatch 2's first crossover event. Besides that, we got a bunch of insight on the various concepts and revisions that went into the creative process.

According to Keller, a lot of fun ideas were considered during their brainstorm sessions. Garou, Sea King and “a weird.. censored version of Puri-Puri Reinhardt” were just a few skin ideas that (unfortunately) didn't make it into the game.

The dev chat also invited Senior Software Engineer Morgan Maddren and Lead Meta Designer Scott Mercer to discuss the state of the game. Various problems in Overwatch 2 were addressed, which included the Quick Play matchmaking issues that most players suffer from, and the steps they're taking to fix them. Maddren remarked that the skill level gap between the best player and the worst player in lobbies have gotten much wider. “That's also something that we're going to be trying to improve”, he stated. These matchmaking woes, it turns out, were already anticipated by the software engineers when they first added Role queues back in September 2019.

“We have some changes going that will actually help shrink (the skill gap) back down hopefully even to better than what it was before”, Maddren remarked. Along with their efforts, the Overwatch 2 team is already running the simulations to see how future improvements will impact the gameplay experience.
